My fitness career started during my junior year of college. I was wrestling at Fort Hays State University. It was right before Christmas break and I received a call that my dad had a heart attack and needed quadruple bypass surgery. I immediately drove four-hours home. While driving, I had time to think about my family history. My mom’s father died when I was only 1 month old from a heart attack. My mom’s mother had diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and COPD before her death. My dad’s mother died when my dad was only 17 years old from a heart attack. She was 39. My dad’s father also had a heart attack and needed quadruple bypass surgery about a decade before my dad did. I finally arrived back home and after seeing my dad in the hospital, I decided to change my major in college and dedicate my studies to a degree in health and human performance with an emphasis on health promotion and wellness. I wanted to give myself and others a chance to fight against their genetics and improve the odds and overcome them. My first and only career after graduating college has been as a personal trainer and working in the fitness industry. I spent the first 12 years of my career working as a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness. In 2016, I started Vaughan Fitness, LLC, and went out on my own. I have experience in corporate wellness, as a health coach, speed and agility training, and in several other fitness-related areas. I am married with 3 children and we live on a small hobby farm just outside of Lawrence, KS. We have a large garden, a pond, chickens, cats, a dog, and a donkey. In 2008, I started coaching middle school and high school wrestling after my college career. I decided to resign from coaching high school due to time away from home, however, I am still currently the head middle school coach in Bonner Springs, KS. My children are now wrestling and I am coaching them at the club level. It’s been a great experience.
